LAP stands for Learning Advancement Plan. In simple terms, LAP focuses on childhood inclusion, which means ensuring that every young child and their family, above and beyond their abilities, have the opportunity to fully take part in a wide range of activities and be valued members of their communities and society. We aim for them to learn basic life skills and become an integral part of a group, to form positive friendships and social connections, and to grow and learn so they can reach their maximum potential. We believe in creating an environment where all children and families can thrive together.
The FDP focuses on learning through play while catering to multiple intelligences which itself is inviting and engaging for children. However, despite fun ways of learning, some children may not be able to stay on par with their peers- even when places and programs are made to be inclusive and welcoming, certain children may require extra help and support to fully participate in activities and learn alongside their peers and adults. This need for the children is what we look to fulfil in LAP. When children are not able to sustain the pressures of standard facilitator to child ratios, it is recommended to start with lower ratios in programs. In high-quality early childhood inclusion, it’s not just about academic learning. Developing social and emotional skills and behaviors that encourage participation are just as important. We ensure to provide the children with utmost attention with expert facilitators focusing on a maximum of three children at a point.
When you approach KLAY for admissions, a certified clinical psychologist will assist you by conducting standardized testing to conclude on the current capacities of the child in various domains of development. Based on the findings, you will be conveyed whether the child will be a better fit in the Learning Advancement Plan(LAP) or the Foundational Development Program (FDP).
The child is assigned to small groups to optimize their developmental progress. Throughout the program, the child receives close monitoring, with experts actively involved at various stages. The LAP content is thoughtfully designed by child psychology experts and clinical psychology practitioners to foster the child’s highest potential on a daily basis. With a facilitator-to-student ratio of 1:3, the child is assured of receiving heightened attention and support from the facilitator. Moreover, the child will get immense exposure in Social Group Therapy under this inclusive approach. This will help the child to grow on self-esteem and learn basic socialization skills while being at KLAY.
A multidisciplinary team of professionals, including clinical psychologists, clinical assessors, special educators, and child psychologists, actively participate in every stage of the LAP program, ensuring comprehensive support for each child. Recognizing the significance of involving primary caregivers, we prioritize their engagement, as we believe that learning should extend beyond the program and into the home environment. Furthermore, we maintain transparency by sharing relevant data with all stakeholders within the program.
If your child is enrolled in the LAP program, we highly value your active involvement in comprehending the program and its associated benefits. We aim to engage you as extensively as possible, recognizing the significance of your participation. To facilitate this, we kindly request that you prioritize follow-up discussions with the team responsible for your child’s progress within the program. These discussions will enable us to maintain open lines of communication and ensure that you are well-informed and actively engaged in your child’s educational journey.
Goals included in an LAP for children may vary depending on the child’s needs and abilities, but might include aspects like developing social skills, improving fine or gross motor skills, building early literacy or math skills, honing leadership skills, managing emotions or addressing any specific learning challenges or developmental delays. Apart from this, the socio-emotional development alongside cognition remains the center point of services provided under LAP at KLAY.
Assessment is a continuous process within our program. It encompasses various methods such as class observations, formal assessments, and feedback from parents, facilitators, and other professionals involved in the child’s development. These comprehensive evaluations occur over time to provide a comprehensive understanding of the child’s progress and inform instructional decisions accordingly.
The core principles of LAP cater to the understanding that each child is unique- having their own needs and requirements. Our program starts with an assessment to understand where the child needs help and we structure their activities around the process. While this can be achieved in a special education center, it deprives the child of access to participation in normative culture. The child might miss reaching the full potential in that case. And if the same child is admitted in standardized child development centers in early years, the child tends to get lost in crowd and again, miss on his or her potential. LAP at KLAY is an attempt to fill this vacuum. The LAP program provides integrated time for all children together as a part of their playtime to promote inclusion and celebrate diversity. While the child enjoys lower ratios for key developmental domains under LAP, she will also get multiple opportunities to eat, play and spend time with peers from Foundational Development Program.
Within the LAP program, we prioritize early identification and assessment of the child’s unique needs and requirements. By doing so, we can effectively tailor our interventions to address these areas of improvement. Consequently, the child is equipped with the necessary academic and non-academic skills, enabling a seamless transition to subsequent levels of schooling.
Through our program, your child will develop a deep understanding and acceptance of individual differences, fostering an inclusive mindset. They will cultivate empathy towards their peers, nurturing a supportive and caring environment. Studies indicate that children who have grown with an inclusive approach from very beginning of life, exhibit better leadership skills and are more equipped to lead the group of diverse population. It is actually a win-win situation for children in FDP as well as children in LAP program.
