Valentine’s Day holds a different meaning for everyone. For some it could be taking the day off to spend time with a loved one, for others it could be a relaxed meal with an old friend. However, whatever the reason or relationship, sometimes when we become parents, we get so caught up with our everyday, routine lives that we forget to take this day to honour, nurture and celebrate love in all its forms. From a parent’s unconditional love for their children, and the special love that grandparents shower on their grandchildren, to the love that is experienced between siblings or friends, Valentine’s Day gives us all a reason to smile.
This year, let us celebrate Valentine’s Day differently with our family. Let us take the time out to make this day of love unique and memorable. Let us celebrate love with our family and children. Let us make this day all about creating beautiful memories with our family.
We have put together a list of ideas on how to make this day extra special with your family:
1. Plan the day out
A great way to ensure that you have an exciting day with the family is to plan it well in advance. While some may like one which is jam-packed with activities, others may want a day that is relaxing as well. The key to planning Valentine’s Day celebrations is to know what you would like to do and how you would like to go about it.
2. Start the day with a hearty breakfast
Who says heart shaped pancakes are not meant for grownups? Practice a family tradition that can involve the entire family. For example, a love-themed breakfast can be a great start to Valentine’s Day celebrations.
3. How about red?
Wearing red may sound very cliché, and you may wonder if you are too old for all these, but a bit of red on your clothing may be fun during your Valentine’s Day celebrations.
4. Game Plan
How about a family game that you always wanted to plan and never got around to taking time out for it? Well, here’s your chance.
5. Whip up something delicious
Cooking together as a family? A perfect addition to the activities planned for your Valentine’s Day celebrations. Maybe you can even look at baking cookies or a yummy cake. A great way to bond with the family, whipping up something that you can all enjoy as a family is fun.
6. Make a themed playlist
Create a playlist along with your children that you can play along through the day. Introduce them to songs and artists that you used to listen to while growing up and to music that still brings back memories for you. Make sure, however, that you include your children in the creating of this playlist so that they could add their favourites as well. And yes, you can always dance to your favourite numbers to break the routine. You can also read our blog on the fascinating connection between music and mathematics.
7. Movie time
A great way to spend time together as a family is a movie. Make a list of movies that you would like to watch and pick one that everyone agrees to. A bowl of popcorn and a warm throw blanket is all that you need now to make this Valentine’s Day celebrations memorable. You can also read our blog on how to choose the perfect film for your child.
8. A candlelit dinner at home
Whether you order or cook something, don’t forget to light some candles and enjoy the meal with the family. This could also be an excellent time for everyone to talk about what they admire about each other during the family Valentine’s Day celebrations.
9. Take lots of photographs
Let this day be all about making memories that last and about keeping them close as well. So don’t forget to make sure you get lots of pictures of the day.
Valentine’s Day is all about spending time with those you love. This season of love, tell your family you care for them, tell them that you will stand by them and be there for them through good times and bad. Assure them that you will do all it takes to strengthen the bond that you have with them making sure that it grows stronger by the day.
Let Valentine’s Day celebrations be all about family this time around!
