Motherhood often looks beautiful from the outside, but behind the smiles and routines, many mothers silently carry emotional exhaustion, mental overload, and constant pressure.

Meghna Yadav, Child Psychologist and Family Counsellor at KLAY Preschools & Daycare, shares the unspoken challenges mothers face and how they can begin to lighten this invisible burden.

Modern motherhood is no longer limited to caregiving. Today, many mothers are balancing professional responsibilities, household management, parenting, and emotional caregiving all at once. Researchers describe this as the “Triad of Work”,  managing paid work, domestic chores, and the invisible mental load of planning and worrying for the family.

In India, this pressure intensifies due to cultural expectations and limited support systems. Studies show that women spend significantly more time on unpaid household work compared to men. Beyond physical work, mothers often carry the mental responsibility of remembering school schedules, meals, emotional needs, and everyday routines.

This constant multitasking can lead to emotional fatigue. Many mothers experience guilt, frustration, or burnout without openly discussing them. Even stay-at-home mothers face mental exhaustion due to the continuous “worry work” involved in parenting.

According to Meghna Yadav, the solution begins with shared responsibility and self-care. Fathers becoming more involved in everyday parenting and household decisions can reduce the invisible mental burden mothers carry. Flexible and empathetic workplaces also play an important role in helping mothers balance work and family life more comfortably.

Most importantly, mothers need to prioritise their own emotional well-being. Taking small breaks, reconnecting with personal interests, spending quality time with partners, or simply making space for rest can make a meaningful difference.

Motherhood is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about creating a healthy and emotionally secure environment for both the child and the parent. Sometimes, taking care of yourself is also a way of taking care of your child.
