Just last week, my nephew and I were on a walk in a park when a blue butterfly flew past him. His eyes opened wide with wonder. He yelled with excitement, “It’s a tiny fairy!” In that simple, momentary encounter with an insect, my nephew experienced awe, observed the insect’s wings, connected them to the idea of a fairy, and used the correct vocabulary to describe it. I realized insects are not just mere bugs but a perfect learning tool for young learners to imagine, explore, observe, and develop critical thinking skills.
