“Fatherhood is not simply about having children; it is about the man one becomes because of them. The day a child is born, a father is born too,” wrote Meghna Yadav, head of Training at KLAY.

The article – Single Fatherhood In India: The Struggles, Stigma And Pressure Of The ‘Perfect Family’ Ideal originally published on NEWS 18 focuses on the tough reality single fathers navigate in today’s world.

Although globally, women account for the majority of solo parents (84.3%), single father households (15.7%) are a steadily growing demographic. Even then, they are never a part of any conversation around parenting.

The article further explores the challenges and societal pressures single fathers face, concerns of raising daughters without a maternal figure, and the guilt and emotional turmoil fathers go through. The battle of work–life balance and financial realities are a few other points the article highlights.

Parenting was never meant to be a solitary task, she writes. Yet, today’s single fathers find themselves doing it alone.

With urbanization and migration, these fathers are unconsciously letting go of the privilege of having informal support systems.

Having said that, research also points out the strengths of such families. Studies suggest that many single fathers demonstrate exceptional resilience, commitment, and adaptability. Many children raised by single fathers grow up in loving, stable, and emotionally secure environments.

“Accessible childcare and supportive workplaces can make a transformative difference in the lives of single fathers,” says Yadav. “When parents know their children are in a safe and nurturing environment, they can perform better both at work and at home. And this is exactly what we at KLAY aim for: to help families raise strong, confident, and capable children.
